How Does SMILE LASIK work?

Laser vision correction works by altering the shape of a part of the eye called the cornea. This is the thin, transparent lens that covers the very front part of the eye and is responsible for refracting the light so that it passes through our eyes and onto the retina. The retina then turns the light into messages that are sent to our brain, which tells us what we can see. When the light is not refracted correctly, it doesn’t land on the retina as it should, causing us to experience blurred vision.

In conventional LASIK, laser technology is used to create a flap in the outer corneal tissue. The laser is then used to change the curvature of the underlying cornea so that light is refracted correctly. However, SMILE uses a very different technique.  In SMILE LASIK there is no flap creation as opposed to a standard LASIK procedure. Instead, a small incision is made on the cornea to provide access to the tissue beneath. This incision is around 80% smaller than that which is used in conventional LASIK, which helps to ensure the integrity of the cornea. Once the incision has been made, the laser is used to create a lenticule – a tiny, disc-shaped area of tissue within the cornea. It is this lenticule that when removed, changes the shape of the cornea so that light can be refracted accurately onto the retina.
