SMILE, which stands for Small Incision Lenticular Extraction, is the most advanced laser vision correction procedure in the field, effectively correcting nearsightedness and astigmatism. Since receiving FDA approval in 2016, SMILE has given millions of patients the opportunity to experience stunning visual clarity and freedom from glasses and contacts.
SMILE is different from LASIK because it does not use ablation or a flap, making it a highly minimally invasive procedure. Instead, your surgeon will use the ZEISS VisuMax femtosecond laser to form a lenticule, which is a thin layer of tissue shaped like a contact lens. Then, they will make a small 3.5 mm incision in the cornea and pull the lenticule through it to correct your refractive error. The incision is 80% smaller than the flap created during conventional LASIK.

Once your surgeon creates the flap, they will gently lift it to access the cornea underneath. Then, they will precisely reshape the cornea with an excimer laser using ultraviolet light and carefully reposition the flap.
