Common Lasik Surgery Terms You Should Know
Before you have Lasik surgery you should do your research on Lasik, but some of the words can be a bit overwhelming because they are not commonly used outside of the process. At Manhattan Lasik Center ®, we want to be sure we give you all the information you need to make an educated decision about Lasik eye surgery.
Lasik Eye Surgery Terms And Definitions
- Ablation – To remove tissue from the cornea.
- Cornea – The clear part of your eye that you see when looking in the mirror. It bends light to form images on the retina. This is not the same part of the eye where cataract surgery is performed.
- Diopter – A measure of the eye given in a plus symbol for farsighted vision or a negative sign for nearsighted acuity.
- Excimer laser – A laser that uses ultraviolet rays to reshape the cornea.
- Hyperopia – Inability to see things close to the face or farsightedness.
- Keratectomy – Removing cornea tissue.
- Laser Keratome – Laser used to create the flap in the cornea.
- Myopia – Difficulty seeing things far away or nearsightedness.
- Presbyopia – Age-related condition that occurs in middle-aged patients and makes it difficult to see things clearly near.
- Stroma – The middle layer of the cornea where the flap is created.
- Wavefront – Detailed measurements of the eye similar to an optical check-up but with more accuracy and additional items.
